Community Outreach Program

Community-Based Efforts

The Knoxville Division employees are involved in many community-based efforts that sponsor disadvantaged children/families, hospitals, minority communities, senior groups, disaster relief and partnerships.  The primary goal is to build working relationships with the surrounding community.  The Knoxville Division personnel visited local area hospitals with small dogs to bring smiles to ill children; the management team actively participated in Hate Crime Working Groups, Minority Community meetings and many other community functions.  In 2005, Knoxville participated in collecting clothing and school supplies for children displaced by Hurricane Katrina and collected money to sponsor displaced families.  Many presentations were made to schools, groups and events regarding crime prevention, terrorism, drugs, gangs, identity theft, internet safety and many other topics. The Knoxville Division annually adopts and sponsors a Thanksgiving and Christmas family to provide holiday gifts, meals, furniture, and clothing the families need.  In addition, each year the Knoxville Division publicly recognizes one local individual or organization that has demonstrated outstanding achievements by presenting them with the Director’s Community Leadership Award.

Citizen’s Academy

Knoxville Division members of Citizen's AcademyThe Knoxville Division held its 3rd Annual Citizen’s Academy in 2005.  The primary goal of the Citizen’s Academy is to promote relationships within the community, educate the community of the FBI’s mission and jurisdiction and foster partnerships.  Citizen’s Academy students learn the FBI rules, regulations and procedures for investigations, how the FBI operates, firearms safety and program fundamentals.  Knoxville Division has formed a Citizen’s Academy Alumni organization which allows each graduating class to network with former students and maintain a working relationship with the FBI.

Adopt-A-School/Junior Special Agents Program

The Knoxville Division annually conducts an Adopt-A-School/Junior Special Agents program.  For the Junior agents 3rd consecutive year, Holston Middle School has been selected to host this program which is offered to sixth graders.  The program was developed to provide mentoring and instruction to students led by agent and support employees.  The students learn about the FBI’s priorities, careers, ERT and photography program, SWAT, Firearms Safety, Internet Safety, Polygraph Examinations, Fingerprinting, Civil Rights, Terrorism, Substance Abuse, and Cultural Diversity through a 15-week program.  The students learn the importance of good self-esteem, discipline and goals to succeed.  The students participate in lectures, complete several assignments and ultimately graduate as “Junior Special Agents” at a ceremony attended by family, friends, teachers, JSA alumni and FBI personnel.
