NEWS RELEASE


Timothy D. Cox, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Knoxville Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Police Chief Sterling P. Owen IV of the Knoxville Police Department, and Tim Hutchison, Sheriff of Knox County, announce the arrest of Steven E. Cheatham for three counts of Bank Robbery.

Cheatham, age 47 of Alabama, but recently residing in Knoxville, has been charged in a federal warrant issued by the United States District Court Eastern District of Tennessee for three counts of Bank Robbery. He was arrested without incident at the Howard Johnson Plaza at 7621 Kingston Pike late this morning by members of the three listed agencies. Oak Ridge Police Department has also been instrumental in the investigation of the robberies.

The robberies occurred June 28, 2006 at the Sun Trust Bank, 118 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, July 3, 2006 at the Community Bank of Tennessee at 7466 Oak Ridge Turnpike in Knoxville, and July 8, 2006 at the Regions Bank, 1298 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Cheatham will be afforded an initial appearance in front of United States Magistrate H. Bruce Guyton at 4:00 p.m. this afternoon.

The public is further reminded that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
