NEWS RELEASE

R. Joe Clark, Special Agent in Charge of the Knoxville Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Maryville Chief of Police Tony Crisp, and Blount County Sheriff James Berrong, announce the arrest today of Troy Gene Shoemaker, Jr., age 31, of Oklahoma, for the robbery of the Alcoa Tenn Federal Credit Union this afternoon.

Just before 1:00 p.m. this afternoon, a lone white male wearing sunglasses, a black t-shirt, and blue jeans entered the federally insured financial institution located at 425 Foothills Mall Drive, Maryville, Tennessee. The man presented a demand note to a teller, and brandished a folding knife. The robber left, on foot, with a plastic shopping bag containing an undetermined amount of money. He was pursued by a bank customer who had seen what was happening. Once outside, another citizen in a vehicle joined in the chase. The robber was followed through some woods and across a street until he was cornered several blocks from the credit union. Maryville Police officers arrived and took Shoemaker into custody without further incident.

Personnel assisting in the investigation were from the Maryville Police Department, the Blount County Sheriff's Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The public is reminded that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
