FBI Arrests Serial Bank Robber Suspected in at Least a Dozen Robberies

On 09/29/2009, Jonathan Gilmore, age 29, of Connecticut was arrested, without incident, by the Miami Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Gilmore is suspected of robbing at least a dozen banks spanning five states, including the robbery of the Clayton Bank and Trust located at 620 Market Square in Knoxville, Tennessee, on 09/11/2009. To date, Gilmore has been charged with Bank Robbery in the Eastern District of Tennessee, the Northern District of Illinois, the Southern District of Florida, and the Middle District of Florida. Gilmore may be facing additional charges in Wisconsin and Indiana.

These types of multi-jurisdictional investigations highlight the importance of the FBI’s partnerships with local law enforcement in combating violent crime. FBI Supervisory Special Agent Michael Maclean, who is responsible for the Violent Crime Program here in Knoxville said, “the Knoxville Division of the FBI remains committed to working with our area law enforcement partners, such as the Knoxville Police Department and Knox County Sheriff’s Office as part of the Safe Streets Task Force, to pursue these types of violent criminals and bring them to justice.”

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
